Dealing with Trauma

Trauma is any incident that causes physical, emotional, or psychological harm. Trauma can occur from any number of events, including combat injuries, childhood abuse, witnessing an alarming situation, or surviving a natural disaster, to name just a few.

Effects of Trauma on the Mind and Body

People may experience a full range of emotions after a loss or during the grieving process, such as: People who have experienced trauma during their lifetime may experience a variety of symptoms. These symptoms may manifest within days of the traumatic events. In some situations, they do not appear until years later. Common effects of trauma include:

Intense emotions

A person who has undergone trauma may experience intense grief, anxiety, depression, confusion, anger, sadness, confusion, or fear.

Mental health disorders

Some traumatic events lead to one or more mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Physical symptoms

Trauma can also bring on physical symptoms, such as dizziness, blurred vision, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, or headaches.

Social problems

After a traumatic event, survivors may find it challenging to connect with others or may engage in less socially acceptable behaviors.
